What Does the Name Aram Mean?
Aram has more than one origin, so it does not have a single settled meaning. One origin is Semitic: in the Hebrew Bible, Aram (אֲרָם) is both a son of Shem and the name of the region and people of Aram in what is now Syria, whose speech was Aramaic. The name is often explained as coming from a root meaning "to be high," which would give a sense such as "exalted" or "highland," but this derivation is not certain.
Aram is also an old Armenian name, taken from the legendary ancestor Aram in Armenian tradition (Արամ). In that use it is not a translated word with a dictionary meaning; it belongs to the traditional genealogy of the Armenian people. The Hebrew and Armenian names are separate in origin and merely share the same form and sound.
Aram Name History & Origins
The Semitic name appears early in the Hebrew Bible. Genesis lists Aram among the sons of Shem (Genesis 10:22), and another passage gives Aram as a grandson of Nahor (Genesis 22:21). Much more often, "Aram" names a territory and its people - the Arameans - including areas called Aram-Naharaim and Aram-Damascus. Assyrian royal inscriptions of the late second millennium B.C.E. mention a people called Aramu, and the Arameans' language, Aramaic, spread widely, later serving as an official language of the Persian Empire; portions of Daniel and Ezra are written in it.
English Bibles carry a small complication. In the King James Version, the ancestor of David in Matthew's genealogy is spelled Aram (Matthew 1:3 - 4), while the Hebrew text of the matching Old Testament passages lists him as Ram (Ruth 4:19; 1 Chronicles 2:9). The Greek form Ἀράμ in Matthew stands behind the English spelling Aram, so the name also appears in the New Testament.
The Armenian Aram developed along a different line. In the history attributed to Movses Khorenatsi, written in the fifth century but drawing on older traditions, Aram is a descendant of Hayk, the legendary forefather of the Armenians. He is described as extending Armenian rule and fighting neighboring peoples, and tradition says other nations took the name "Armenians" from him. That is a traditional account rather than a documented record, and scholars have not settled how the name Aram relates to the word Armenia, which may come from other sources.
Today Aram is used as a given name mainly among Armenians and among Assyrians and other Aramaic-speaking Christian communities of the Middle East; it also appears in the English-speaking world as a biblical name.
