What Does the Name Aquiles Mean?
Aquiles is the Spanish and Portuguese form of the ancient Greek name Ἀχιλλεύς (Achilleus), the name of the hero of the Iliad. The meaning of the Greek name is not settled. One widely repeated explanation derives it from ἄχος (achos), "grief" or "pain," and λαός (laos), "people," giving a sense such as "grief of the people" or "he who brings grief to the people." That reading suits the hero's role in the epic, but the second element of the name does not correspond to laos in a regular way, and many scholars treat the name as pre-Greek, a survival from an older Aegean language, rather than a transparent Greek compound. The safest statement is therefore that the meaning is uncertain and that "grief of the people" is a traditional interpretation rather than a confirmed translation.
Aquiles is not related to the Latin aquila, "eagle," or to names such as Aquila and Aquilino, even though the first letters look similar.
Aquiles Name History & Origins
The Greek name passed into Latin as Achilles, the form used by Roman writers, and from Latin it entered the vernacular languages of medieval and Renaissance Europe. Spanish and Portuguese adopted it as Aquiles, alongside Catalan Aquil·les and Italian and French Achille. In Spanish the Greek chi had already become a plain /k/ sound in Latin, and because Spanish writes that sound as qu before i, the name came to be spelled Aquiles; the ending -es also follows Spanish patterns.
The name is older than the epics. Tablets of the Mycenaean period written in Linear B contain the personal name a-ki-re-u, generally understood as an early form of Achilleus, which indicates that a name of this shape was in use in Greek-speaking lands well before Homer. Its later fame, however, rests on the Iliad and the Trojan War cycle, in which Achilles is the foremost Greek warrior. The story of his heel gave Spanish the everyday phrase talón de Aquiles, "Achilles' heel," for a point of weakness.
Because the name reached Spanish mainly through classical literature and mythology rather than through a major biblical figure, it has been used in Spain and Latin America chiefly by families drawing on that classical tradition. A separate early Christian thread exists: a Roman martyr named Achilleus, venerated together with Nereus, is commemorated in Rome.
