What Does the Name Antonino Mean?
Antonino is the Italian and Spanish form of the Latin name Antoninus. Antoninus is a Roman cognomen, or personal surname, formed from the older Roman family name Antonius with the suffix -inus; its literal sense is "of Antonius" or "belonging to Antonius." The Italian and Spanish name Antonio comes from the same root.
The meaning of Antonius itself is uncertain. It is generally treated as a Roman family name, possibly of Etruscan origin, and no securely established Latin or Greek root gives it a definite meaning. Traditional name books often gloss Anthony and its relatives as "priceless" or "invaluable," and Antonino sometimes inherits that gloss, but this is a customary interpretation rather than a securely documented etymology. A separate traditional association with Greek anthos "flower" is also not secure.
In Italian, the ending -ino is a diminutive suffix, so Antonino can also be understood as a diminutive of Antonio, meaning "little Antonio." This later Italian use exists alongside the older inherited form Antonino from Antoninus. The feminine form Antonina follows a similar pattern.
Antonino Name History & Origins
The Latin name Antoninus was a Roman cognomen derived from Antonius. It was borne by the emperor Antoninus Pius, who ruled from 138 to 161 CE, and by Marcus Aurelius, whose full imperial name included Antoninus. Later emperors, including Caracalla, also used the name, and the imperial dynasty of the second century is commonly called the Antonine dynasty after Antoninus Pius.
In Italy, the Latin Antoninus became Antonino. The Italian form is borne by Saint Antoninus of Florence, born Antonino Pierozzi (1389 - 1459), a Dominican friar and archbishop. He is the best-known religious figure who bore the name. The same form Antonino is also used in Spanish.
In Italian naming, Antonino also served as a diminutive of Antonio, formed with the common suffix -ino. The short form Nino has been used for Antonino and for other names ending in -nino.
