What Does the Name Anna Mean?

Anna comes from the Hebrew name חַנָּה (Ḥannāh), meaning "grace" or "favor." It belongs to the root חנן (ḥ-n-n), a verb meaning "to be gracious, to show favor" that the Hebrew Bible uses for God's favor toward people. The name passed into Greek as Ἄννα, the form found in the Septuagint and the New Testament, and from Greek into Latin as Anna. The English name Hannah is the same Hebrew name taken directly from the biblical text, while Anna reflects the Greek and Latin route; both point to the same meaning. A separate Latin name Anna existed in the Roman world - Virgil gives it to the sister of Dido in the Aeneid - and its origin is not securely known, possibly Etruscan, so it should not be merged with the Hebrew name. The similar-sounding Sanskrit word anna, "food," is unrelated.

Anna Name History & Origins

In the Hebrew Bible, Ḥannāh is the wife of Elkanah and the mother of the prophet Samuel; her story opens the first book of Samuel. When the Jewish scriptures were translated into Greek, her name was written Ἄννα, and that is the form the New Testament uses for the prophetess Anna in the Gospel of Luke. Christian use of the name grew out of these texts.

Christian tradition also gives the name to the mother of the Virgin Mary. Her story comes from the second-century Protoevangelium of James, not from the canonical Gospels, but she was widely venerated in the medieval church. In Western Europe the name settled into forms such as Anne in French and English, Anna in German, Italian, and the Scandinavian languages, and Ana in Spanish and Portuguese; Slavic languages use Анна (Anna), with the diminutive Anya. Among medieval and later bearers are Anna of Kiev, who became queen of France in the eleventh century, and the twelfth-century Byzantine historian Anna Komnene, who wrote the Alexiad.

A separate Roman feminine name Anna is recorded in Latin literature: Virgil gives it to the sister of Dido in the Aeneid. Its origin is uncertain and may be Etruscan, so it is a distinct strand from the Hebrew name, though the two came to look identical in Latin and later European use. In English, Anna and Anne have long been used side by side, while Hannah remains the direct form of the Hebrew name.
