What Does the Name Anina Mean?

Anina is a diminutive form of Anna, the name that reached most of Europe from the Hebrew Hannah (חַנָּה). Hannah comes from the root ḥ-n-n, "to show favor," and its meaning is commonly given as "favor" or "grace." In the Greek of the New Testament the name appears as Anna, which passed into Latin and from there into the European languages. The ending -ina is a diminutive suffix used in German, Italian, and the Slavic languages; added to Anna it produces pet forms such as Annina, of which Anina is a shortened form. Anina therefore carries the meaning of Anna rather than a separate etymology of its own.

Anina Name History & Origins

The name behind Anina entered Europe as Anna, the Greek form of Hebrew Hannah. In Christian tradition Anna was the name of the mother of Mary and of the prophetess who greeted the infant Jesus in the Gospel of Luke, and devotion to Saint Anne helped make Anna one of the most widely used women's names in medieval and modern Europe.

Anina belongs to the family of affectionate forms built from Anna. It is used in German-speaking Europe, including Switzerland and Austria, where Annina is the more usual intermediate form; in Scandinavia; and in Slavic-speaking countries such as Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, Poland, and Czechia, where it appears alongside Ana and Anna. In Romania, where Ana is a standard given name, Anina is also found as a girl's name. The Romanian town of Anina, in Caraș-Severin County, shares the spelling but is a place name rather than evidence for the personal name.

The name is also the title of a 2013 Uruguayan animated film, in which the main character's full name, Anina Yatay Salas, is a palindrome; this is a later literary use and says nothing about the name's origin.
