What Does the Name Aniah Mean?

Aniah is most often explained as a variant spelling of the biblical Hebrew name Anaiah (עֲנָיָה). In that name the root עָנָה ('anah), "to answer," is joined to Yah, a short form of the divine name, giving the sense "Yahweh has answered." The same Hebrew root can also mean "to be afflicted" or "to be humble," so a few interpreters connect the name with lowliness rather than with an answer; "Yahweh has answered" is the customary reading.

A second explanation treats Aniah as an English spelling of Anya or Ania, diminutives of Anna. Anna comes from the Hebrew חַנָּה (Hannah), usually translated "grace" or "favor." These two explanations rest on different source names, and the spelling Aniah by itself does not show which one is intended.

Aniah Name History & Origins

The Hebrew name Anaiah appears in the book of Nehemiah. A man of that name stands beside Ezra when the Law is read aloud to the assembly (Nehemiah 8:4), and an Anaiah is listed among those who seal the covenant (Nehemiah 10:22). Translators of the Bible into English have rendered the name in more than one way, including Anaiah and Anayah.

The Anna family has a separate history. Hannah passed into Greek as Anna and then into Latin and the languages of Europe, where it produced diminutives such as the Russian Anya and the Polish and Ukrainian Ania. Spelled Aniah, the name can be read as an English form of that family. In English-speaking countries the spelling also appears beside similar-sounding names such as Aniyah and Anaya, but those are separate names with their own derivations, and Aniah should not be assumed to share their origin.
