What Does the Name Andrews Mean?
Andrews is an English and Scottish patronymic name meaning son of Andrew or Andrew's son. It is formed from the personal name Andrew plus a genitive or patronymic -s, the same pattern seen in surnames such as Williams and Roberts. Andrew itself comes from the Greek Andreas (Ἀνδρέας), which is based on anēr (ἀνήρ), genitive andros (ἀνδρός), meaning 'man.' The personal name is often glossed as 'manly' or 'man,' but that is the meaning of Andrew, not a separate meaning of Andrews.
When Andrews is used as a given name, it is a transferred use of the surname rather than an ancient given name with its own independent etymology. It is not a variant spelling of Andrew; the final -s marks the patronymic form. The name is found mainly in English-speaking countries, where surname-derived first names are common.
Andrews Name History & Origins
The personal name Andrew was known in medieval Europe through Christianity and especially through Saint Andrew, the apostle and brother of Saint Peter. Andrew became the patron saint of Scotland, and the name was used in Scotland and England in the Middle Ages. From this personal name, patronymic bynames developed: a man called Andrew might be identified as Andrew's son, and in time that description became a hereditary surname. In English and Scottish usage, the genitive or patronymic -s was added to the personal name, producing forms such as Andrewes and Andrews.
Surnames of this type became fixed in the later Middle Ages, when English and Scottish families increasingly passed family names from one generation to the next. Spelling was not standardized, so forms such as Andrewes and Andrews both occur. The surname Andrews is found in England and Scotland; in Scotland its use was connected with the prominence of Saint Andrew.
Andrews is also used, though less often, as a male given name in the English-speaking world. This use comes from the surname rather than from the medieval personal name directly. A child might be given the first name Andrews to carry a family surname, a common pattern for surname-derived given names. The name has no separate ancient origin as a given name; its history as a first name is tied to the history of the surname.
