What Does the Name Anaiza Mean?

Anaiza is a feminine name best explained as a variant of Anaís, also spelled Anaïs and Anaisa, a name used in Spanish-, Portuguese-, and French-speaking regions. That older name goes back to the Greek Ἀναΐς (Anaïs), a feminine form built on Anna - Greek Ἄννα, from the Hebrew Ḥannāh (חַנָּה), which means "grace" or "favor." The meaning customarily given for Anaiza is therefore "grace."

A second explanation links Anaïs to the Old Iranian goddess name Anāhitā (later Anahid), from an Avestan word meaning "undefiled, pure." This is a proposed derivation rather than a settled one, and it is not established that the Greek and Iranian names are related. On the evidence available, "grace" is the meaning to give, and the deeper etymology of the name family should be treated as not fully resolved.

Anaiza Name History & Origins

The older forms of the name come from the Greek-speaking Christian world: Ἀναΐς was used as a personal name there, and it passed into Latin and then into the vernaculars of western Europe. In France it became Anaïs; in Spain and Portugal it appears as Anaís and Anaisa. From Iberia these forms traveled to Latin America, where they are still used.

The spelling Anaiza follows Spanish and Latin American writing habits, in which z and s frequently stand for the same sound - the feature called seseo. For that reason Anaiza and Anaisa are best understood as one name written two ways, rather than as two names with separate histories.

Two later uses kept related forms of the name visible. In France, the writer Anaïs Nin (1903 - 1977), born in Cuba to Cuban parents, is a well-known bearer of the French spelling. In the Dominican Republic, Anaisa is the name of a spirit honored in the folk religious tradition known as the Twenty-One Divisions. Neither is the source of the name; both are later applications of an older form.
