What Does the Name Amy Mean?
Amy is an English feminine name meaning "beloved." It comes from Old French Amee, a feminine form derived from Latin amata, the past participle of amare, "to love." In Latin, amata literally means "loved" or "beloved." The Old French name passed into Middle English in forms such as Amy, Amie, and Amye. It is not derived from the similar-looking French word amie, "female friend," which comes from Latin amica.
Amy Name History & Origins
The name entered English after the Norman Conquest through Old French Amee. Latin Amata was also the name of a character in Virgil's Aeneid, the wife of King Latinus, though the English name's development is chiefly traced through the French form. In medieval England, Amy was used as an ordinary given name. The name later spread with English settlement to other English-speaking countries. In modern use, Amy is sometimes a short form of Amelia, though the names have separate origins. A well-known literary use is Amy March in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (1868), but this is a much later appearance than the medieval English examples.
