What Does the Name Amory Mean?

Amory is an English given name and surname that comes from the Germanic personal name Amalric (also written Amalaric). It is built from two elements: amal, usually explained as "vigor" or "bravery" and in some accounts connected with "work" or "labor," and rīks, meaning "ruler" or "king." The literal sense is something like "vigorous ruler," commonly given in name books as "brave ruler." The same amal element appears in the name of the Amali, the Gothic royal line.

The name entered English through the Norman French personal name Amaury (also Aimery); the -ory spelling belongs to the English surname that developed from that personal name, and Emery is a related English form. The spelling may suggest Latin amor, "love," but that word is not the source of the name.

Amory Name History & Origins

The Germanic name behind Amory is recorded early in the Gothic world: a Visigothic king of the early sixth century, Amalaric, bore it. In the medieval West the name lived on in Romance forms, including French Amaury and Aimery and Italian and Spanish Amalrico. It was also carried by the Crusader kings of Jerusalem named Amalric in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.

After the Norman Conquest, French-speaking settlers brought the personal name to England, where it appears in medieval records in forms such as Amauri, Almeri, and Emery. From it developed English surnames, among them Amery and Amory. In later centuries Amory came into use as a given name in its own right, alongside the surname.

Amory Blaine, the central character of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel This Side of Paradise (1920), is a well-known literary use of the name; it is an instance of an existing name in fiction, not the name's origin. The surname was also borne by the American writer Cleveland Amory.
