What Does the Name Aminah Mean?

Aminah is an Arabic feminine name built on the root ʾ-m-n, which carries the ideas of safety, security, and trust. The name Āminah (آمِنَة) is usually glossed as "safe," "secure," and "trustworthy." It is the feminine counterpart of the masculine Amīn (أمين), "trustworthy, faithful," and belongs to the same word family as amān (safety, protection), amānah (a trust or deposit), and īmān (faith, belief). The literal sense is closer to "one who is safe" or "one who is trusted" than to the looser rendering "faithful," although the meanings overlap in Arabic usage.

Aminah Name History & Origins

The best-known early bearer is Āminah bint Wahb, the mother of the Prophet Muhammad, who belonged to the Banū Zuhrah clan of the Quraysh in Mecca. Traditional sources report that she died at al-Abwāʾ, a place between Mecca and Medina, while returning from a journey, when her son was still a young child; her death is commonly dated to about 577 CE. Because of her place in the sīrah (the traditional biography of Muhammad), the name became familiar across the Muslim world. Some accounts give her name in the shortened form Amna.

With the spread of Islam, the name entered many languages beyond Arabic. It is used in Persian, Urdu, Turkish, Malay, Indonesian, Somali, and Swahili-speaking communities, among others. Turkish has the form Emine; Somali uses Aamina; Hausa and other West African languages use Amina or Aminatu. In Hausa tradition, Amina is associated with Aminatu, a 16th-century queen of the city-state of Zazzau, in what is now northern Nigeria. The spellings Amina, Aminah, Aamina, Aaminah, and Amna reflect different conventions for writing Arabic with Latin letters rather than separate origins.
