What Does the Name Amin Mean?

Amin is an Arabic name meaning "trustworthy," "faithful," or "honest" - a person who can be trusted. It comes from the Arabic root ʾ-m-n, which carries the ideas of safety, security, and confidence. The same root gives amān (safety, protection), īmān (faith, belief), and the prayer word āmīn ("amen"). As a title, al-Amīn, "the trustworthy," was applied to people known for honesty, and Islamic tradition uses it for the Prophet Muhammad before the start of his prophetic mission.

Persian and Turkish render the name as Emin, and North African French spelling often writes it Amine. The feminine Amina (also Aminah) is a related but distinct given name. In South Asia, amin was additionally a Mughal administrative title for a trusted revenue or land official; the surname Amin found in India and Pakistan is connected with that official usage as well as with the personal name. The Arabic name is unrelated to the ancient Egyptian god Amun or to the biblical Ammon, which resemble it in sound only.

Amin Name History & Origins

Amin rests on an Arabic root that already meant "to be safe" or "to trust" in pre-Islamic times. Because the word described a quality rather than a tribe or place, it served early as a descriptive byname and then as a personal name. According to Islamic tradition, al-Amīn, "the trustworthy," was the title by which the Prophet Muhammad was known in Mecca before his prophetic mission. As Arabic spread with Islam, Amin followed it as a given name, and through Persian and Turkish it reached Central Asia, Anatolia, the Balkans, and South Asia.

Turkish developed its own form, Emin, which became established in Ottoman and modern Turkish naming; Persian uses both Amin and Emin. In the Abbasid caliphate, al-Amin also served as a regnal title: the caliph Muhammad al-Amin, son of Harun al-Rashid, ruled from 809 to 813. In the Maghreb and francophone Africa the spelling Amine is standard, and the closely related feminine Amina, the name of the Prophet's mother in Islamic tradition, is used alongside it.

In South Asia the word amin named a Mughal revenue official - a trusted agent who surveyed land and assessed taxes - and the surname Amin borne by families in Gujarat, Punjab, and elsewhere reflects that administrative use as much as the Arabic personal name. The surname is found among both Muslim and Hindu communities in western India.
