What Does the Name Amen Mean?

Amen is a Hebrew word, אָמֵן (amen), used as a liturgical affirmation meaning "so be it" or "truly." It comes from the root אָמַן (aman), whose core sense is to be firm, steady, or trustworthy - the same root behind Hebrew words for faith and faithfulness. In the Bible the word is spoken to confirm a prayer, oath, or blessing, so its customary meaning is agreement and certainty rather than the root's literal idea of firmness. The Egyptian divine name Amun (also spelled Amon or Ammon, from Egyptian jmn, "the hidden one") can appear as "Amen" in some renderings, but it is a separate name with a different origin; the resemblance is a coincidence of transliteration. When Amen is used as a personal name, it comes from the Hebrew liturgical word.

Amen Name History & Origins

Amen runs through the Hebrew Bible as a response of confirmation. In Deuteronomy 27 the people answer "Amen" to the curses pronounced at Mount Ebal, and in the Psalms it closes doxologies (Psalm 41:13, 72:19, 89:52, 106:48). Isaiah 65:16 speaks of the "God of Amen." In Jewish worship it became a fixed congregational response to blessings and prayers.

The Greek New Testament kept the Hebrew word untranslated rather than rendering it with a Greek equivalent, and the Gospels record Jesus using it to introduce solemn sayings; the Gospel of John doubles it, "Amen, amen," usually translated "truly, truly." From Christian liturgy, where it ends prayers and creeds, the word passed into widespread use, and Islam adopted it as āmīn, said after the recitation of the Fatiha. Because the term is so closely bound to worship, it is only occasionally given as a personal name, and its use in that way carries the meaning of the liturgical response rather than the history of a long-established naming tradition.
