What Does the Name Amauri Mean?
Amauri is a Romance form of the Germanic name Amalric, whose usual sense is given as industrious ruler or work-power. It joins two Germanic elements: amal, 'work' or 'labor,' and rīc, 'ruler' or 'power.' The same second element appears in Frederick and in the -ry of Henry.
The first element, amal, is also the source of the name of the Amali, the royal dynasty of the Ostrogoths, so some explanations read the whole name as 'ruler of the Amali.' The -rīc part is secure; the exact force of amal - the common noun 'work' or the dynastic name - is the main point of uncertainty. Amauri is the Portuguese spelling; the French form is Amaury, Latinized as Amalricus.
Amauri Name History & Origins
The Germanic name Amalric belonged to the military elite of the early Middle Ages. Amalaric was a king of the Visigoths in the sixth century, and the name reappears among the nobility of the Crusader states: Amalric I ruled the Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1163 to 1174, and Amaury de Montfort led the Albigensian Crusade after the death of his father, Simon de Montfort. Through Frankish and Norman families the name took root in France in the form Amaury.
On the Iberian Peninsula it appears as Amauri and Amaury, and Amauri became an established given name in Portugal and Brazil. English use of the spelling Amauri generally reflects Portuguese and Brazilian influence rather than an independent Old English tradition.
