What Does the Name Aman Mean?
Aman is a male given name whose most widespread source is the Arabic word ʾamān (أمان), meaning "safety," "security," or "protection." It belongs to the root ʾ-m-n, the same root that gives amīn ("trustworthy"), amānah ("a trust"), īmān ("faith"), and muʾmin ("believer"). The literal sense is safety or security; because security and the absence of conflict shade into peace, the word is commonly rendered as "peace" as well.
In South Asia the same word, Hindi अमन and Urdu امن, is the everyday term for peace, and Aman is a common given name there among Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. That South Asian word is normally traced through Persian and Urdu back to the Arabic amān. A Sanskrit origin of the same shape is sometimes proposed in naming references, but it is not firmly established, so the Arabic derivation is the one usually given.
Aman Name History & Origins
The root ʾ-m-n is one of the most productive in Arabic. From amina, "to be safe, to feel secure," come amān (safety, protection), amānah (a trust or something deposited with another), amīn (trustworthy, also a title for a trusted overseer), īmān (faith), and muʾmin (believer). In classical Islamic law, amān was the protection a Muslim could grant to a non-Muslim visitor, merchant, or envoy, allowing that person to enter and travel through Muslim-ruled territory in safety; the holder of such a guarantee was called a mustaʾmin.
As Arabic-speaking traders and rulers moved beyond Arabia, the word traveled with them. Persian and Urdu took it as aman, "peace"; Malay and Indonesian use aman for "safe"; Swahili has amani, "peace"; and Turkish uses aman as a cry for mercy or help. Central Asian Turkic languages adopted it as well, and Aman is a male given name in Kazakh and related languages, often as the first element of a longer name such as Amanzhol or Amangeldi.
In northern India and Pakistan, Aman is a common male given name across the region's religious communities. It frequently forms the first part of longer names, for example Amanpreet, Amandeep, and Amanjot among Sikhs, or Amanullah among Muslims, where -ullah means "of God."
Aman is not related to several names that merely look similar. The Jordanian capital ʿAmmān (عمان) is a different word from a different root, going back to the ancient Ammonites; the biblical Haman, antagonist of the Book of Esther, bears a Persian name; and Amon, the name of a king of Judah, is Hebrew. Sharing a few letters does not make these names relatives of Aman.
