What Does the Name Amadeus Mean?

Amadeus is a Latin name meaning "lover of God." It is formed from the Latin verb amare, "to love," and the noun Deus, "God." It is a Christian name rather than a classical Roman given name, used in medieval Latin and later adopted into various European languages. Its sense is close to that of the Greek name Theophilus (Θεόφιλος), from Theos, "God," and philos, "loving" or "dear"; the two names were sometimes treated as equivalents.

Amadeus Name History & Origins

Amadeus appears in medieval Europe, especially in the lands of the House of Savoy. Several counts and dukes of Savoy bore the name from the 11th century onward, including Amadeus VIII, Duke of Savoy, who was elected antipope as Felix V in 1439. The name also belonged to Blessed Amadeus of Lausanne, a Cistercian bishop in the 12th century, and to Amadeus of Portugal, a 15th-century Franciscan reformer.

In different European languages the name took the forms Italian Amedeo, French Amédée, Spanish Amadeo, and Portuguese Amadeu. The Latin form Amadeus was used in learned and religious contexts. Because it matched the meaning of the Greek Theophilus, the names were sometimes treated as equivalents. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, baptized Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus, was later called Amadeus; during his life he often used the forms Amadé and Amadeo.

In modern English, the name is familiar from Mozart and from Peter Shaffer's 1979 play Amadeus and Miloš Forman's 1984 film adaptation. The Latin form is used in German-speaking Europe, while Italian and Spanish speakers generally use Amedeo and Amadeo.
