What Does the Name Alyona Mean?
Alyona is a Russian given name derived from the Greek name Helene. Its traditional meaning is 'light' or 'torch,' but the etymology of Helene is disputed.
The Russian form is Алёна, a variant of Елена (Yelena), which is the Russian form of Greek Ἑλένη (Helénē). In Greek, Helene may come from ἑλένη (helenē), 'torch,' or it may be a pre-Greek name with no recoverable meaning. The association with light is traditional, not a securely documented literal translation.
Alyona Name History & Origins
The Greek name Helene is ancient. Its best-known literary use is Helen of Troy: in myth she was the daughter of Zeus and Leda, and her abduction by Paris was the legendary cause of the Trojan War. She appears in Homer's Iliad.
In the Christian era, Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, is the best-known historical bearer of the name; she is traditionally credited with finding the True Cross. Russian adopted the name as Елена (Yelena) after the conversion to Christianity. The familiar form Алёна (Alyona) developed from Yelena and appears alongside diminutives such as Лена (Lena) and Лёна (Lyona). It was traditionally treated as a familiar form rather than a separate official name. In the 20th century it became common as an independent given name in Russia. The spelling with ё marks the stressed 'yo' sound; because the two dots are often omitted in Russian writing, the name also appears as Алена.
