What Does the Name Alvis Mean?
Alvis is a masculine name used in English. Two derivations are commonly proposed. One takes it from Old Norse Alvíss, a dwarf's name meaning "all-wise," from alr "all" and víss "wise." The other treats Alvis as a variant of Alvin, an English name from Old English Ælfwine, formed from ælf "elf" and wine "friend." The first is a literal compound meaning; the second is a meaning inherited from the parent name. Because the modern forms look alike, not every use of Alvis can be assigned confidently to one source.
Alvis Name History & Origins
The Old Norse form Alvíss appears in Alvíssmál, a poem in the Poetic Edda. In the story, the dwarf Alvíss comes to claim Thor's daughter, and Thor delays him with questions until dawn, when the dwarf is turned to stone by the sunlight. The name's elements, alr "all" and víss "wise," fit the dwarf's reputation for broad knowledge. This is a literary and mythological use rather than evidence that Alvíss was a common everyday personal name in Norse society. In English, Alvis is also used as a variant of Alvin, which continues Old English Ælfwine. The Norse and English strands are separate sources that became identical in spelling, so the later history of Alvis is not one continuous line.
