What Does the Name Alvie Mean?
Alvie is chiefly a pet form of the English name Alvin, and it usually carries that name's meaning: "elf friend." Alvin continues the Old English personal name Ælfwine, built from ælf, "elf," and wine, "friend." In Old English verse wine could also mean "lord" or "protector," so the compound has been understood both as "friend of elves" and, in heroic usage, as "elf-lord." The literal sense is the etymological one; later explanations that read the name as meaning "wise" or "noble" are interpretations rather than translations.
Alvie is also used as a short form of other names beginning with Alv-, and those parents have different meanings. Alvah is a biblical Hebrew name (borne by a descendant of Esau in Genesis 36:40) usually glossed as "his highness" or "exalted," though the Hebrew derivation is not settled. Alva is a separate name, sometimes linked to Latin alba, "white," or to Gaelic Alba, "Scotland." When Alvie stands for one of these, its meaning is theirs, not Alvin's.
Alvie Name History & Origins
Ælfwine was in ordinary use among the Anglo-Saxons. It was borne by Ælfwine, king of Deira in the seventh century, and by Ælfwine, bishop of Winchester in the eleventh. After the Norman Conquest of 1066, personal names of this old Germanic stock largely dropped out of use in England, although the elements survived in surnames such as Alwin and Alvin.
The given name Alvin was in use again in England and the United States by the nineteenth century, and Alvie arose as a spoken short form of it, with the familiar -ie ending that English uses to make pet names. Alvie has also been recorded as a given name in its own right, and it has been used for girls as well as boys, though it is more often given to boys. The spelling Alvy is a variant; the best-known use of that spelling is Alvy Singer, the main character of the film Annie Hall (1977), which is a modern literary use of the name and not its origin.
The name Alvie also belongs to a parish and a loch in Strathspey in the Scottish Highlands. Whether that place name has any connection to the personal name has not been established, and the two are best kept apart.
