What Does the Name Alp Mean?
Alp is a Turkish given name taken from the Turkish word alp, which means "hero," "brave man," or "warrior." The word descends from Old Turkic alp, used in the same sense of courage and fighting prowess. It is not a short form of Albert or Alban, and it is unrelated to the German Alp (a night spirit) or to the Alpine word for a mountain pasture; the resemblance is coincidental.
Alp Name History & Origins
Among Turkic peoples, alp served as a title for a warrior or champion, and it was attached to the names of rulers and military leaders. The best-known example is Alp Arslan, the Seljuk sultan who reigned from 1063 to 1072; his name pairs alp with arslan, "lion." The element also appears in compound given names such as Alparslan and Alpay, and in the legendary Turkic hero Alp Er Tunga, a figure preserved in traditional accounts rather than in contemporary records.
As a name standing on its own, Alp is used in Turkey for boys and also occurs there as a surname. Its rise as a personal name belongs to the modern Turkish practice of drawing given names from Turkic vocabulary, and it keeps the older association of the word with bravery and leadership.
