What Does the Name Alan Mean?

Alan is an English masculine name whose established meaning is uncertain. It is usually traced to a Breton personal name recorded in medieval Latin as Alanus; Breton is a Celtic language. Two Celtic explanations are often given: one connects the name with a root meaning "rock," and another with a word meaning "handsome." A separate and disputed explanation derives it from the Alani, an Iranian people of late antiquity whose name may be related to a word for "noble" or "Aryan." Because the early forms do not settle the question, the original sense of Alan remains uncertain.
