What Does the Name Ajax Mean?
Ajax is the English form of the ancient Greek name Αἴας (Aias), borne by two heroes of the Trojan War cycle. The meaning of the Greek name is not securely established. Ancient commentators linked it to the verb αἰάζω (aiazō), "to wail, to lament," a reading that suits the death of the greater Ajax but is a traditional explanation rather than a demonstrated etymology. Other discussions have proposed a connection with αἶα (aia), a rare poetic word for "earth," or have treated the name as pre-Greek, inherited from an older Aegean language. Neither proposal can be confirmed from the surviving evidence, so the name is best described as of uncertain meaning.
Ajax Name History & Origins
English Ajax descends from Latin Ajax, which renders Greek Αἴας. Greek epic kept two distinct figures under that name: Ajax the Great, son of Telamon of Salamis, and Ajax the Lesser, son of Oileus of Locris. In the Iliad the greater Ajax is the strongest Achaean fighter after Achilles; he duels with Hector, and after Achilles' armor is awarded to Odysseus he takes his own life. His story is the subject of Sophocles' tragedy Ajax and of a long speech in Ovid's Metamorphoses. The lesser Ajax is remembered for seizing Cassandra in Athena's temple and for drowning on the voyage home.
The greater Ajax received hero honors at Salamis, and the Athenians counted him among the heroes who gave their names to the ten tribes, the tribe Aiantis. The name entered English mainly through the reading of classical epic and tragedy, not through biblical or saints' traditions, and it also appears in Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida, where Ajax is drawn as a slow-witted strongman. The name has been reused in modern times, most visibly by the Dutch football club AFC Ajax, which takes its name from the hero.
