What Does the Name Aitana Mean?
Aitana is a Spanish feminine given name taken from the Sierra de Aitana, a mountain range in the province of Alicante in the Valencian Community of Spain. As a personal name it has no separate lexical meaning of its own; its sense comes from the place name it borrows.
The origin of the toponym Aitana is not settled. One explanation that is often repeated connects it with Basque aita, "father," but Basque was not spoken in the Alicante area in historical times, and this derivation is generally regarded as doubtful. Another view treats Aitana as an older, pre-Roman (Iberian) place name whose meaning has not been recovered. Because the evidence is thin, the ultimate meaning of the name is best described as uncertain, even though its immediate source - the mountain range - is clear.
Aitana Name History & Origins
The name comes from the Sierra de Aitana, a range inland from the Costa Blanca whose highest summit, also called Aitana, rises to about 1,558 meters and is the highest point in the province of Alicante. The place name is older than its use as a personal name; it belongs to the layer of pre-Roman and later place names found across the Valencian region.
Aitana as a given name is a modern Spanish usage drawn from that mountain range. It is most closely associated with the Valencia region and is also used elsewhere in Spain. Among well-known bearers are the actress Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and the singer Aitana Ocaña, who performs under the single name Aitana.
