What Does the Name Aiah Mean?

Aiah is a Hebrew name meaning "kite" or "hawk," a bird of prey. It comes from the Hebrew noun אַיָּה ('ayyāh), which appears in the Hebrew Bible as an unclean bird in the dietary lists (Leviticus 11:14; Deuteronomy 14:13) and in Job 28:7. The same word is used as a personal name. English translations usually render the bird as "kite" in the dietary laws and sometimes as "vulture" in Job 28:7; modern name references often give "hawk." These are approximate English labels for a bird of prey. The name is not a compound with a divine element, so its literal sense is simply the bird. The similar Arabic name Āyah (آية), meaning "sign" or "verse," is a separate name and is sometimes spelled Aiah in English; it is not the source of the Hebrew name.

Aiah Name History & Origins

In the Hebrew Bible, Aiah is the name of two men. The first is Aiah, the father of Rizpah, a concubine of King Saul (2 Samuel 3:7). Rizpah appears in 2 Samuel 21:8 - 11, where she guards the bodies of Saul's descendants after they are executed by the Gibeonites. Aiah is mentioned only as her father, and the narrative gives no other details about him. The second Aiah is a Horite ancestor listed in Genesis 36:24 and 1 Chronicles 1:40 as a son of Zibeon and a descendant of Seir. These genealogies place the name among the Horites of Edom. The spelling Ajah also appears in some English Bibles, such as the King James Version of Genesis 36:24, while 1 Chronicles 1:40 and 2 Samuel use Aiah.

The name is known mainly from the Hebrew Bible and its translations. It has not been a common traditional English given name. The same Hebrew letters are used in the modern Israeli name Aya (איה), usually for girls, but the biblical Aiah is masculine.
