What Does the Name Aeson Mean?
Aeson is a name from Greek myth, carried by the father of Jason. Its meaning is uncertain. The name appears in Greek as Αἴσων (Aisōn), and it has sometimes been linked to the Greek noun αἶσα (aisa), meaning "portion, lot, fate." That connection is only a suggestion; no etymology for the name is widely accepted, and the name should not be confused with the similar-sounding Jason, which has a separate origin.
Aeson Name History & Origins
Aeson belongs to the heroic legends of Thessaly in northern Greece. In the traditional accounts he is king of Iolcus and a son of Tyro. In Homer's Odyssey, Tyro is said to have borne Aeson, Pheres, and Amythaon to her husband Cretheus, after earlier bearing Pelias and Neleus to the god Poseidon. Pelias took the throne of Iolcus, and Aeson's son Jason was sent to bring back the Golden Fleece. In different versions of the story, Aeson is killed by Pelias or takes his own life when Jason returns.
The name is used in early Greek poetry and drama, including the Odyssey, Pindar's victory odes, and Euripides' Medea; Apollonius of Rhodes also uses it in the Argonautica. These are literary appearances of a figure from myth rather than the name's origin as a personal name. In modern English it remains rare as a given name.
