What Does the Name Aeliana Mean?

Aeliana is a feminine name built on the Roman family name Aelius, the nomen of the gens Aelia, a plebeian clan of ancient Rome. The form is Latin: the adjective Aelianus ("of Aelius," "belonging to the Aelii") takes the feminine ending -a. The literal sense of the root Aelius itself is not known. Its resemblance to the Greek hḗlios ("sun") has led to the popular gloss "sun" or "light," but resemblance is not a documented derivation, and an Etruscan origin has also been proposed without scholarly agreement. The "sun" meaning should therefore be treated as a later symbolic reading rather than the name's etymology.

Aeliana Name History & Origins

In Roman naming, women of a clan generally carried the family name, so the feminine Aelia identified a woman of the gens Aelia, and Aeliana is the feminine counterpart of Aelianus, a derived name that served both as a family-based name and as a cognomen. The clan produced the emperor Publius Aelius Hadrianus, and the feminine Aelia remained in use into late antiquity, appearing in the names of fifth-century imperial women such as Aelia Eudocia and Aelia Pulcheria. The best-known bearer of the masculine form is Claudius Aelianus, called Aelian, a Roman author of about AD 200 who wrote in Greek, including On the Characteristics of Animals and the Varia Historia. Aelianus Tacticus, a Greek writer on military tactics, and a fourth-century Roman officer named Aelianus who led a revolt in Gaul against Maximian, are also recorded.

Aeliana is rare as a modern given name in English-speaking countries and is usually encountered as a classical or literary-flavored choice rather than a common one. It is sometimes grouped with the similar-looking Eliana, but Eliana is normally explained from Hebrew Eli ("my God") and is generally treated as a separate name rather than a form of Aeliana.
