What Does the Name Adriana Mean?
Adriana is the feminine form of the name Adrian, which descends from the Latin family name Hadrianus. That Roman name is tied to the place name Hadria, a town in Picenum in central Italy, known today as Atri. A second Adriatic port, Adria, near the Po delta, also carried the name. In its literal sense, then, Adriana means "of Hadria" or "woman from Hadria."
The origin of the place name Hadria itself is not settled. One long-standing suggestion links it to Latin ater, "black," perhaps describing dark soil or dark water, but this is a proposed derivation rather than a confirmed one. What is clear is that the personal name developed from the town name, not from a descriptive word meaning "dark." The occasional gloss of Adriana as "dark one" is an interpretation built on that uncertain link.
Adriana Name History & Origins
The Roman family name Hadrianus was borne by the emperor Publius Aelius Hadrianus, who ruled from 117 to 138 and is remembered for the wall in Britain and for his travels through the provinces. The feminine form Hadriana also appears in Latin use. From this root, the name passed into the Romance languages as Adriano and Adriana, taking forms such as Italian and Spanish Adriana and Portuguese Adriana.
Because the male form Adrian was carried by early Christian saints, including the martyr Adrian of Nicomedia, the name survived through the medieval period in much of Europe. The feminine Adriana followed the same path, appearing in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, and later in France and the English-speaking world. The name entered English use chiefly through contact with these continental forms.
Adriana also has a place in literature: she is a character in Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors. That use reflects the name's presence in Renaissance England but is not the source of it.
