What Does the Name Adora Mean?

Adora is a feminine given name meaning "adored" or "beloved." It comes from the Latin verb adorare, "to adore, to worship." That verb was formed from ad- ("to") and orare ("to speak, to pray"), so its earliest sense was "to speak to" a god, which developed into "to worship" and later "to adore." With the feminine ending -a, the name carries the sense "she who is adored."

In Spanish, the devotional name Adoración ("Adoration") is given in reference to the adoration of the Magi or of the consecrated host, and Adora is commonly treated as a short form of it. Both routes yield the same meaning, and for a single bearer the two are usually impossible to tell apart. The similar name Dora is unrelated: it comes from Dorothy, ultimately Greek dōron, "gift."

Adora Name History & Origins

Adora enters use from a Latin common word rather than from an older personal name. In Spanish-speaking countries, and in places shaped by Spanish naming such as the Philippines, Adoración was given as a devotional name and Adora served as its shortened, everyday form. English speakers would have recognized the link to the verb "adore" directly, and the name has been used in the English-speaking world in small numbers.

Modern recognition of the name comes largely from popular culture. In the 1980s She-Ra stories, including the animated film The Secret of the Sword (1985), the heroine Adora is the twin sister of He-Man; the 2018 series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power gives the same name to its main character. Terry Pratchett used the name for Adora Belle Dearheart in the Discworld novels Going Postal (2004) and Making Money (2007). These are modern fictional uses and show nothing about the name's origin.

The ancient town of Adora, also called Adoraim, in the Judean hill country shares the spelling but is a place name; nothing reliably connects it to the personal name.
