What Does the Name Aditi Mean?

Aditi is a Sanskrit name usually translated as "boundless," "limitless," or "unbound." It is formed from the privative prefix a- ("not") plus diti, a form connected to the root dā, "to bind" or "to divide." Taken literally, the name describes what is not bound and not divided - free and without limit.

The name is tied to Diti, in later texts the sister who is mother of the Daityas. Where Diti stands for what is divided or limited, Aditi stands for its opposite. Readings of Aditi as a personification of infinity, of unbounded space, or of the sky are later symbolic interpretations of that literal sense, not a separate etymology.

Aditi Name History & Origins

Aditi appears in the Rigveda, the oldest layer of Sanskrit hymn literature, where she is addressed as the mother of the Adityas - a group of gods that includes Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, and Bhaga. Several hymns invoke her directly, calling her "mother of the gods" and describing her as the boundless one associated with space and the sky.

In later Hindu texts, including the epics and the Puranas, her role is recast. There she is commonly described as a daughter of Daksha and a wife of the sage Kashyapa, and as the mother of the Adityas. In the Vamana story, Vishnu is born to her as Vamana, the dwarf, after she seeks a son. These later accounts expand on what the Rigvedic hymns state more briefly.

The name is used as a feminine given name in India and in Indian diaspora communities, drawn from the goddess's place in the tradition.
