What Does the Name Adithi Mean?

Adithi is a South Indian spelling of the Sanskrit name Aditi (अदिति), whose established meaning is "unbounded," "free," or "limitless." The Sanskrit word is traditionally analyzed as the negative prefix a- ("not") joined to dita, a participial form of the root dā-, so the literal sense is "not bound" or "unbound." The same root also carries the idea of dividing, and some explanations of the name therefore stress "indivisible" or "without limit" rather than "unbound"; the general sense of freedom and boundlessness is the part that is not in dispute. In the oldest texts the word works both as an ordinary adjective and as a divine name, and the two uses are not clearly separated.

Adithi Name History & Origins

Aditi is one of the oldest names in the Sanskrit tradition. She appears in the Rigveda as a goddess and as the mother of the Ādityas, a group of gods that includes Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, and Bhaga. One hymn of the Rigveda (1.89) addresses her as sky, air, mother, father, and all the gods together, treating the name as a way of speaking about what has no boundary. Vedic hymns also call her the mother of kings and ask for her protection.

Later Sanskrit literature gives her a fuller story. In the Mahabharata and in the Puranas she is one of the daughters of Daksha and a wife of the sage Kashyapa. Her sons are the devas, or Ādityas, while the sons of her sister Diti are the Daityas, the rivals of the gods. The name also appears in Hindu devotional and ritual contexts as a name of the divine mother.

The spelling Adithi with -th- reflects a South Indian transliteration habit. In Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam writing, the Sanskrit dental consonant t is regularly rendered as "th" in Roman letters, so Aditi is often written Adithi in those regions, without any change in meaning. The name is given to girls throughout India and in Indian communities abroad.
