What Does the Name Adan Mean?

Adan has two distinct origins. As a form of Adam, it comes from Hebrew and means "man" or "human being." The Hebrew word adam is used in Genesis both for humanity and for the first man, and it is closely related to adamah, "ground" or "earth." A traditional link to adom, "red," is less certain. In Spanish the name is written Adán, and the unaccented Adan is an English spelling of that form.

Separately, the Arabic name ʿAdan (عدن) means "Eden" or "paradise." It comes from the root ʿadn, which is associated with dwelling or settling, and it is also the Arabic name of the Yemeni city Aden. This Arabic name is not related to the Hebrew adam.

Adan Name History & Origins

The Hebrew name Adam appears in Genesis as the name of the first man. It passed into Greek as Adam in the Septuagint and into Latin as Adam in the Vulgate. From Latin it entered the languages of Europe. Spanish developed Adán, with an accent on the second syllable; English often drops the accent, giving Adan. In Somali, Aadan or Adan is a masculine form of the same Adam tradition.

The Arabic name ʿAdan developed separately from the Arabic word for Eden and the city of Aden. It is used as a feminine given name in some Arabic-speaking communities. Because English transliteration often omits accents and diacritics, the single spelling Adan can stand for either the Hebrew-derived name or the Arabic name. The similar-looking Irish name Aidan comes from Aodhán and is not related.
