What Does the Name Adam Mean?

Adam is the English form of the Hebrew name אָדָם (ʾadam), meaning 'man' or 'human being.' In the Hebrew Bible the word can refer either to humanity as a whole or to the first man in Genesis. The name is traditionally connected with אֲדָמָה (ʾadamah), 'ground' or 'earth,' because Genesis 2:7 describes the man being formed from the dust of the ground. That wordplay is the source of the common explanation that Adam means 'earth' or 'man of earth.' A separate proposed derivation links ʾadam to a root meaning 'red,' as in אָדֹם (ʾadom), perhaps describing reddish soil or skin. The most securely established sense is 'man' or 'human being'; the 'earth' and 'red' explanations are customary or disputed, not separate origins of the name.

Adam Name History & Origins

The Hebrew name אָדָם (ʾadam) appears in the Book of Genesis, where Adam is presented as the first human and the ancestor of humanity. Genesis 5:1-2 uses the word for humanity collectively ('male and female... called their name Adam'), while the genealogies that follow treat Adam as an individual. The name passed into Greek as Ἀδάμ in the Septuagint and into Latin as Adam; from there it entered Old English and other European languages. In the New Testament, Paul calls Adam the 'first man' and contrasts him with Christ as the 'last Adam' (1 Corinthians 15:45), a contrast that gave the name a fixed place in Christian theology. In Islam, Arabic Ādam is the name of the first man and prophet. Later European literature, including medieval mystery plays and Milton's Paradise Lost, used the already ancient name; these works did not create it.
