What Does the Name Acacius Mean?

Acacius is a Latinized form of the Greek name Akakios, whose established meaning is 'innocent' or 'not evil.' The Greek name is formed from the prefix a-, meaning 'not,' and kakos, meaning 'bad' or 'evil,' so its literal sense is 'not evil' or 'without evil.' In Christian use the name was commonly understood as 'innocent' or 'guileless.' Despite the similar sound, Acacius is not related to the plant name acacia.

Acacius Name History & Origins

The Greek name Akakios was in use in the eastern Mediterranean in the early Christian centuries. It was borne by several martyrs and saints, which helped establish it as a Christian name. One early figure is Saint Acacius of Byzantium, a martyr; another is Acacius of Amida, a fifth-century bishop in Mesopotamia who is remembered for ransoming Persian captives. In Latin, the name took the form Acacius, which was used in the western church and in medieval Latin records.

The name also belongs to Acacius, Patriarch of Constantinople from 471 to 489. He supported Emperor Zeno's Henotikon and resisted Roman demands in the dispute that became known as the Acacian Schism (484 - 519). This church leader is a historical figure, and his name is preserved in the schism's name.

Through Byzantine and Orthodox tradition, the name passed into Slavic languages as Akaki (Russian Акакий, Ukrainian Акакій, Bulgarian Акакий) and into Georgian as Akaki (აკაკი). Western European forms include Italian and Spanish Acacio, Portuguese Acácio, and French Acace. Nikolai Gogol used the Russian form for the central character of 'The Overcoat' (1842), Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin; this is a famous literary use, but the name itself is much older.
