What Does the Name Randy Mean?
Randy is a short form of the English names Randall and Randolph, and occasionally of Rand or Miranda. It has no independent root of its own: its meaning is the meaning of the longer name it stands for. Randall and Randolph descend from the Norman name Randolf, which comes from Old Norse Rögnvaldr, made up of regin (counsel, or the gods) and valdr (ruler). Taken literally, that compound means something like "counsel-ruler" or "ruler's counsel"; the common looser gloss is "mighty ruler" or "ruler advised by the gods."
There is a second element in the background. Old English had its own name Randwulf, from rand (shield) and wulf (wolf), meaning "shield-wolf." The Norman Randolf and the native Randwulf were similar enough that medieval English spellings such as Randal and Randolf blended the two. So the gloss "shield-wolf" that is often attached to Randy belongs to the Old English name, not to the Norse one. Which ancestry a particular Randy has is usually simply unknown, since the short form does not preserve the distinction.
Randy Name History & Origins
Randolf arrived in England with the Normans after 1066 and remained in use through the Middle Ages, though it was never among the most common names. It also became a surname early, which is why English families named Randolph and Randall are found from the medieval period onward. As a given name it was revived in the 18th and 19th centuries in Britain and North America, and the pet forms Rand and Randy grew up alongside it.
Randy as a name in its own right follows the broad English habit of turning longer names into short forms ending in -y. In the United States it became a familiar boy's name in the mid-20th century, frequently given at birth rather than only used as a nickname. Some well-known bearers were formally named Randall or Randolph - the songwriter Randy Newman was born Randall - while others, such as the country singer Randy Travis, were given Randy outright. The name has also occasionally been used for girls, often spelled Randi.
One unrelated word shares the spelling: in British English, randy is an adjective meaning lustful, recorded from the 1600s and of separate, uncertain origin. The resemblance to the personal name is coincidental, and the two have no shared etymology.
