Peter Jackson began making short films as a teenager, teaching himself stop-motion and special-effects techniques. After leaving school, he worked at a newspaper while filming with friends on weekends. His first feature, the low-budget science-fiction comedy Bad Taste (1987), grew out of those projects and became a cult success. He followed it with the puppet comedy Meet the Feebles (1989) and the horror comedy Braindead (1992), released in the United States as Dead Alive, earning a reputation for resourceful practical effects and dark humor.
His international breakthrough came with Heavenly Creatures (1994), a psychological drama based on a real New Zealand murder case. Co-written with Fran Walsh, his longtime partner and collaborator, it earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Jackson then directed the supernatural comedy-horror The Frighteners (1996) before turning to J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001 - 2003), shot largely in New Zealand, became a worldwide success. The Return of the King (2003) won eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director; Jackson shared the adapted screenplay award with Walsh and Philippa Boyens. He went on to direct King Kong (2005), The Lovely Bones (2009), and The Hobbit trilogy (2012 - 2014).
Later documentaries include They Shall Not Grow Old (2018), which restored and colorized First World War footage, and The Beatles: Get Back (2021), assembled from the band's final recording sessions. Jackson has also worked as a producer and co-founded the visual-effects company Weta Digital. In 2010 he was appointed a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to film. He and Walsh have two children.
