Megha is a Sanskrit name meaning "cloud." It is the ordinary Sanskrit noun megha (मेघ), which refers specifically to a rain cloud, so the name is simply the common word used as a personal name rather than the name of a god or a mythological figure.
The word comes from an old Indo-European set of terms for cloud and mist. Related forms in other languages include Avestan maēγa-, also "cloud," and Lithuanian migla, "mist." The same word survives in modern South Asian languages, as in Hindi and Marathi megh and Bengali megh, where it means "cloud," especially the rain clouds of the monsoon.

Because megha is a common noun, it appears in Sanskrit literature without any connection to naming. The best-known example is the poem Meghadūta ("The Cloud Messenger") by the classical poet Kalidasa, in which an exiled lover asks a passing cloud to carry a message to his wife. Compounds built on the word are also old: in the Ramayana, Indrajit is called Meghnad, "cloud roar," for the thunderous sound of his birth cry. These literary uses show the word's prominence in poetry, but they do not show that Megha was in use as a personal name at that time.
As a given name, Megha is used by Hindu families in South Asia and in South Asian communities elsewhere. In India it is given mainly to girls; in Nepal it is used for boys as well. It is generally written in the Devanagari script and in the scripts of the various Indian languages, and it travels easily into English because it is short and made of familiar sounds.
