What Does the Name Robyn Mean?

Robyn is a variant spelling of Robin, meaning "bright fame." The name reaches English through Old French, where Robin was a diminutive of Robert. Robert derives from Old High German Hrodebert, formed from hruod ("fame") and beraht ("bright"). Together the elements are conventionally glossed as "bright fame."

Robyn and Robin share this derivation. The -y spelling is an English respelling of the same name, not a separate origin. The name is unrelated to the small bird: the bird was named after the personal name, as in "Robin redbreast," because of its red breast, so the direction of borrowing runs from the human name to the bird.

Robyn Name History & Origins

Robin began as a familiar form of Robert in medieval French and English. French speakers added the diminutive ending -in to Rob, a short form of Robert, and that pet form passed into Middle English. In medieval England, Robin was one of the ordinary everyday forms of Robert rather than a rare coinage.

Robin Hood, the outlaw of English ballad and legend, is the best-known medieval bearer of the name. He belongs to legend rather than to documented history, and his name shows how common the form was in that period. By the late Middle Ages, Robin was also used as an independent given name, no longer only as a nickname for Robert.

The -y spelling Robyn developed later as an English variant. In the 20th century, Robin and Robyn also came to be used for girls in English-speaking countries, and the -y form is now especially associated with female bearers, though it is still given to boys as well. The same underlying name appears in other European languages in the various forms of Robert and in diminutives such as French Robin.
